Tiles for Shops, Offices and Clinics: Commercial Floor Guide
Choosing tiles for shops, offices, clinics and restaurants: hard-wearing vitrified floors, safe finishes, large formats and easy daily maintenance.

A shop, office, clinic or small restaurant takes far more foot traffic than a home. People walk in with street shoes, trolleys roll across the floor and the space is cleaned every day. The floor also shapes how customers see your business. The right tiles need to look good on day one and still look decent after years of use.
What commercial floors demand
- Heavy, constant traffic. Hundreds of people a day can walk on a shop floor, especially near the entrance and billing counter.
- Grit and abrasion. Street dust under shoes slowly wears down soft glazes.
- Wheels and loads. Trolleys, chairs, racks and display units add point loads and scraping.
- Daily cleaning. Floors are mopped often, sometimes with stronger cleaners.
- Safety. Wet entrances on rainy days are a slip risk for customers.
- Downtime. Repairs mean closing the space, so long life matters more than at home.
Recommended tiles
| Tile | Best for |
|---|---|
| Full body vitrified tiles | Very heavy traffic, colour runs through the body |
| Double charge vitrified tiles | Shops and offices, thick wear layer |
| GVT / PGVT | Showrooms and boutiques wanting a premium look, lower traffic zones |
| Anti-skid tiles | Entrances, commercial kitchens, washrooms |
| Large format slab tiles | Showrooms, lobbies, feature walls |
Ask about the abrasion resistance class of a glazed tile for commercial use. Higher classes are meant for heavier traffic. Our guide on how to check tile quality covers what to look for.
Finish and size
- Matt finish is the most practical for busy shops. It hides scratches and gives better grip.
- Satin or lappato gives a more polished look while being more forgiving than high gloss.
- Glossy suits low-traffic showrooms and offices where appearance matters most.
Larger sizes like 800x800 mm, 600x1200 mm and 800x1600 mm mean fewer joints, which looks cleaner and collects less dirt. They need a flat base and experienced tilers.
Layout and colour tips
- Mid-grey, concrete and stone looks hide dirt and wear between cleanings.
- Use a grip zone at the entrance, with a matt or anti-skid tile or a recessed mat area for rainy days.
- Mark walkways with a change in tile tone to guide customers in larger stores.
- Plan around fixtures. Place racks and counters before finalising the tile layout to reduce awkward cuts in visible areas.
- Keep spares. Store a few boxes from the same batch so damaged tiles can be replaced without a visible shade difference.
Mistakes to avoid
- High gloss tiles at a wet entrance.
- Light, plain colours in a high-traffic shop. They need constant cleaning to look presentable.
- Mixing batches in one large floor. Shade differences are easy to spot across open space.
- Choosing a tile only from a showroom photo without checking its strength and finish for commercial use.

Common questions
Which tiles last longest in a shop?
Full body and double charge vitrified tiles hold up best under heavy foot traffic because their colour and design go deeper than a thin surface glaze. Wear is less visible over time.
Are glossy tiles okay for a showroom?
Glossy tiles look attractive in a showroom, but they show scratches and footprints in high-traffic paths and can be slippery near the entrance. Many owners use matt or satin at the entrance and glossy in display areas.
What tiles suit a restaurant kitchen or clinic?
Use anti-skid tiles in wet zones like commercial kitchens and washrooms, and smooth, easy-to-clean vitrified tiles in clinics where hygiene and quick cleaning matter.
Can I tile a shop quickly to avoid closing for long?
Planning ahead helps. Choose tiles in stock, keep the full quantity ready from one batch, and ask your contractor about phasing the work section by section.
