How the numbers work

The step-by-step method, with a worked example, is in our guide on calculating tiles for a room.

How do I measure a room for tiles?

Measure the floor wall to wall in feet, at the widest points. Multiply length by width for the area. Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add them.

Why is a 600x600 mm tile not 4 sq ft?

600 mm is about 1.97 ft, so one tile covers about 3.875 sq ft. Using 4 sq ft would leave you a few tiles short on a large floor.

How much extra should I add?

Around 10 percent suits most rooms. Use 5 percent for a simple rectangle with a straight layout, and 15 percent for diagonal layouts or rooms with many corners.

How many tiles are in a box?

It varies by manufacturer, size and thickness. The count is printed on the box, and the shop can tell you for the design you choose.
